MSI SPATIUM M480 PLAY 2 TB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD

MSI SPATIUM M480 series are the flagship products within the MSI SPATIUM family and hence, it comes with a new design language that features a bunded heatsink module. The main difference between the standard M480 and the new PLAY variant is that the standard one came with a more bulky heatsink that was optimized for use in enthusiast PC designs while the PLAY variant can be used for both PC and PS5.

The MSI SPATIUM M480 SSDs are based on the NVMe SSD form factor and feature a 96-layer TLC-based 3D NAND flash which offers larger capacities, better performance, and slightly lower power input. The M480 SSDs are also based on the high-end Phison PS5018-E18 controller.

FEATURES

  • PCIe Gen4x4 interface and complies with the NVMe 1.4 standard
  • Sequential Read speeds up to 7000MB/s and Write speeds up to 6800MB/s
  • Up to 1400 TBW
  • Built-in data security and error-correction capabilities
  • 500GB to 2TB capacities in M.2 2280 form factor
  • Suitable for both desktop and notebook
  • 5-Year Warranty

In terms of performance, MSI’s SPATIUM M480 2 TB has sequential read speeds of 7000 MB/s and write speeds of 6800 MB/s. The Random read speeds of these drives are up to 650K IOPS and the write is 700K IOPS. The MSI SPATIUM M480 2 TB SSD has an idle power draw of 22mW and a maximum operating power of 8.2W. The endurance of the lineup is rated at 1400 TBW or 1,600,000 hours which should last a good amount of time with these drives. You are also looking at a 5-year limited warranty through the entire lineup.

Conclusion

For their first storage product, the MSI SPATIUM M480 is quite impressive. It has good performance and while you will most probably not see it once you have it installed in your build, it actually looks quite nice as well. RM1175 is definitely on the higher side of things when it comes to PCIe NVMe SSDs, but the actual market price is slightly lower, and well in line with the rest of the PCIe 4.0 SSDs capable of 7000MB/s speeds.

While I personally still think that PCIe 4.0 SSDs aren’t necessary yet in PCs if you are a gamer, but if you need the faster storage speeds, this is a great option. There’s also the point that “there’s no such thing as overkill”, which is a perfectly valid reason to get a PCIe 4.0 drive like the MSI SPATIUM M480. PlayStation 5 owners might also want to consider getting the MSI SPATIUM M480 to upgrade their storage, as it easily exceeds the PS5’s 5500MB/s speed requirement.

Testing the MSI Spatium M480 HS: Sizzling Sequential and 4K Performance

We test PCI Express 4.0 SSDs on a desktop system that includes an MSI Godlike X570 motherboard and AMD Ryzen 9 CPU. The testbed has 16GB of DDR4 Corsair Dominator RAM clocked to 3,600MHz and an Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics card. (See more about how we test SSDs.)

The M480 HS’s heatsink, which fastens to the drive by means of a bracket and an M.2-sized strip of tacky, stretchy thermal material, is removable—in fact, drive, heatsink, bracket, and thermal tape come as separate components, and you assemble it like a sandwich. We tested this puppy with the heatsink attached, rather than relying on the standard over-slot heatsink already in place on our testbed’s motherboard as we usually do.

PCMark 10 Overall Storage and Trace Tests

PCMark 10’s overall storage benchmark(Opens in a new window), from UL—the world’s leading independent benchmark developer—runs a full slate of typical drive-access tasks. The numbers listed below as the Overall Score are the software’s sanctioned results, representing how well a drive does throughout the entire PCMark 10 run.

After the Overall Score are some more granular measures derived from PCMark 10’s background «traces.» These tests simulate how quickly a drive is capable of launching a particular program—or, in the first case, completing the Windows 10 startup procedure.

Next comes a game-launching test set, which simulates how quickly a drive can read shallow-depth small random 4K packages, one of the more commonly used file-block sizes for game installations. The drives are also put through a launch test for Adobe creative apps. As anyone who works with video or images in Photoshop or Premiere Pro can tell you, these powerful programs can leave you waiting impatiently.

Finally there are the PCMark 10 copy tests, also derived from PCMark 10 traces. These numbers might look low compared with the straight sequential-throughput numbers achieved in benchmarks like Crystal DiskMark 6.0 and AS-SSD, charted below, but that’s due to the way this score is calculated and the nature of (and differences between) the source data sets.

The Spatium M480 HS’s PCMark 10 Overall Storage score of 2,334 was in line with other PCIe 4.0 SSDs and, as we had expected, faster than the 1TB Spatium M470 (score 2,066). Its scores in the PCMark 10 trace tests were middling, although it excelled in the ISO file and copy tests.

Crystal DiskMark Sequential Speed and AS-SSD Copy Tests

The Crystal DiskMark 6.0 sequential tests provide a more traditional speed measure, simulating best-case transfers of large files. After them come a trio of tests, which consist of copying large files or folders from one location on the test drive to another, using the AS-SSD benchmarking utility.

The M480 HS’s sequential read/write results in Crystal DiskMark (6,458MBps read and 6,504MBps write) are short of the drive’s sequential speed ratings of 7,000MBps read and 6,800MBps write (for the 2TB version we tested), but the read speed is still one of the fastest and the write speed is the zippiest we’ve encountered, edging out the Mushkin Gamma. The MSI’s Crystal DiskMark 4K read and write speeds were also well above average. In the AS-SSD copy tests, the M480 HS’s overall results were average, with program speed slightly above par and game speed a tad below.

Testing the MSI SPATIUM M480 SSD with the PS5 – Test Parameters

All of the tests of the MSI SPATIUM M480 SSD on the PS5 were conducted in groups of 5 games at a time. In the event of a game arriving on a disc, the full disc data and all current updates were transferred over the MSI SPATIUM M480 SSD. The disc might be present, but it is only for system verification and would be an identical setup to the PS5 internal SSD that it is being compared against. The SSD was tested using the latest PS5 Beta Firmware update (3.0 or 3.1 depending on the time of testing as a further update was made available during the widespread testing) and although the supported drives when the SSD expansion feature might change, the MSI SPATIUM M480 SSD is fully functioning and supported on the PS5 at the time of writing. Performance

Synthetic

CrystalDiskMark shows that MSI didn’t overclaim when it comes to the rated speeds. The MSI SPATIUM M480 hit 7069.77MB/s read and 5438.09MB/s write speeds, which is about right on the money, with MSI claiming that the drive is capable of 7000MB/s read and 5500MB/s write.

AS SSD puts it down a notch, with the drive still putting out a respectable 5784.82MB/s read and 5157.80MB/s write. With that said, speeds of above 5GB/s is nothing to scoff at.

Anvil’s Storage Utilities sees it slightly slower, but it still maintains speeds well above the 5000MB/s mark.

This linear write test in AIDA64 puts the drive through continuous writes, and we can see that the MSI SPATIUM M480 maintains speeds of around 5.2GB/s until about the 33% mark, which should be its SLC cache capacity. After some massive fluctuations, we see that it manages speeds of around 1GB/s, averaging 2.2GB/s at the end of the test.

One thing we noted with the MSI SPATIUM M480 is that you should definitely slap a heatsink onto it. While shorter benchmarks didn’t really affect it, when we subjected the MSI SPATIUM M480 to the AIDA64 linear write test, it hit around 52°C even with our AORUS Z490 MASTER’s heatsink slapped onto it. It can quite easily throttle without one, which is something that you might want to take note of. With that said, you can probably run it without one if you are only going to use it for general daily tasks and not constantly writing to it.

Real-world

It seems that while the benchmark performance is excellent, our game-loading test shows that it isn’t the fastest SSD when it comes to game loading times, at least in Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood. With that said, only the Kingston KC2500 is just a smidge faster, with the MSI SPATIUM M480 outperform the rest of the stack quite easily.

The MSI SPATIUM M480 is quite expensive, even when stacked up against other PCIe 4.0 x4 drives in the same performance bracket. With a RM1175 MSRP, you are essentially paying RM1.175 per GB, which is about the price that you would expect to pay for an SSD about two years ago.

This looks good. Full speed at 128KB transfers is excellent, as is the drive’s 512B performance and the nice even pattern it generates as transfer sizes increase.

PS5 SSD Expansion Testing with the MSI SPATIUM M480 SSD

The SPATIUM M480 from MSI is a recent release on the M.2 NVMe SSD market but one that was rather hyped up in summer 2021. Arriving from a big name in PC architecture, this new SSD promised high-performance gaming storage for desktop computer, laptop and console gamers alike. Additionally, it was one of the first confirmed PS5 expansion upgrade compatible SSDs. Whether you are looking at upgrading the SSD on your PS5 because you are running out of space or because you heard that some SSDs can increase load times for your favourite games, it is always going to be sensible to spend a few minutes researching before pulling the trigger and spending hundreds on the MSI SPATIUM M480 to avoid finding out that the benefits are negligible or, worse still, actually slow your games down! Equally, you should always factor in that the PS5 is a relatively new console and games developers are still in the early stages of maximizing how much they can do with the CPU, Memory, GPU and (of course) super-fast NVMe M.2 SSD. Therefore the commitment you make on buying an SSD upgrade to your PS5 needs to also factor in that it will still perform well in the years to come. The MSI SPATIUM M480 meets a number of the key specifications of the PS5 storage bay, but then again many, MANY SSDs do. So today I want to put this SSD through it’s paces with many games to see how well it compares against the internal PS5 SSD doing the same thing. NOTE – FULL Videos of the testing of the MSI SPATIUM M480 that combined cover more than an hour can be found at the bottom of the article. This article primarily covers the load times of games and saves on the PS5 using the MSI SPATIUM M480 SSD and how they compare with the internal PS5 loading the same game. If you want to watch the full videos that cover PS5 MSI SPATIUM M480 use that feature frame rates, texture swapping, asset management and more, I recommend you watch those videos at the end of this article.
