The Total Bytes Written (TBW) in this SSD is pretty huge at 1,800 TB, that’s 8 times the rated TBW endurance of other SSDs that usually has 200 TBW. It means when you’re a content creator and have average use of 50GB per day, the SSD will last for a lifetime at 98 years.
While the 2TB variant doubles the TBW, at 3,600 TB – which will last up to 200 years for 50GB per day consumption.
For those who haven’t know what is Total Bytes Written or TBW in an SSD, it is simply a terabyte written limit where a total amount of data can be written into the SSD before it will likely to fail.
Aside from the rated TBW, it has multiple protection that will prolong the service life of the SSD, like the smart management technology that effectively monitors the status of the solid-state drive to maximizes its full potential, especially for gaming.
PCIe 4.0 Finds Its Footing
Though drives like the Corsair Force Series MP600 might have been the first to the scene, the TeamGroup T-Force Cardea Zero Z440 show what happens when new technologies have a bit more refinement time.
While the drive isn’t an outright winner in every category it competes in, it posts enough technical speed wins to be dubbed the overall fastest PCIe 4.0 drive of the three tested thus far, albeit in most cases by tiny margins. At 25 cents per gigabyte MSRP, the drive is assuredly more expensive than most equivalent-capacity PCIe 3.0 M.2 drives, but as far as we’re concerned (taking the discounted street price into account), this is the price you pay for living on the bleeding edge.
That said, those who want near-Z440 performance but don’t want to pay the premium to upgrade to an X570 board would do almost as well with substantially cheaper PCIe 3.0 drives like the WD Blue SN550 instead. At half the per-gigabyte price and netting you most of the performance under most circumstances, the WD Blue SN550 and its 3.0 ilk come close enough to the Cardea Zero Z440 to feel much the same in most everyday tasks.
If you have an appropriate AMD-based system (or are building one for demanding tasks like content creation and expect to do loads of large-file copies and saves within the same SSD), go for 4.0. You might gain some benefit from those straight-line transfers and the high TBW rating. But today’s PCIe 3.0 drives remain solid next-best options for less intensive users who own a motherboard that’s still 3.0-bound and don’t mind a step down in long-term write durability.

Look and Feel
T-Force Cardea Zero Z440 comes with a blister packaging that represents its simplicity. Just like the prepaid card sold in the store, you can simply tear the cut-line in the packaging to reveal the tiny SSD.
The back shows some details of the SSD and serves as the instruction manual, it also contains the warranty stickers at the back that are needed in case you need the SSD for repair.
Since this comes into an M.2 factor size, it is smaller than a Piso-coin, ideal for a DIY portable storage device using an external m.2 enclosure.
Unlike other M.2 that merely have thermal protection or if any its has massive aluminum heat spreader, the Cardea Zero comes with an ultra-thin thermal label, an attractive sticker that is made with graphene copper foil and coated with black color for its design. The main reasons why Team Group tag it as “The Aesthetic of Thinness”.
The copper foil is thin as the sticker at the back, it’s measured at 0.2mm which provides space and compatibility to any existing heat sink of a motherboard. The combination of the ultra-thin copper foil and the existing heat sink from a motherboard will also give a double performance in terms of cooling.
At the back, you’ll find important information about the SSD. The 1TB version has a model number of TM8FP7001T. It also contains the warranty seal.
When installed in a motherboard, the copper label gives a gold reflection effect when being hit with our lightning setup inside the rig, it turns into an RGB M.2 SSD. lol

AS-SSD Copy Benchmark
Next, we ran the drives through AS-SSD’s copy benchmark to simulate real-world usage. It’s split into three categories. ISO File approximates the time it takes to copy two large files. Programs Folder is made up of multiple smaller files to represent typical program structures. Lastly, Games Folder is a mix of the two since game install folders often contain several large compressed files and many smaller ones.
A nail-biting fight for first place
The Force MP600 takes the lead in all three categories. However, there’s a mere 1% difference between it and the Z440 when copying over games. The most significant disparity between the first and second place winner happens when copying programs. Even then, the MP600 is better by less than 10%.
The Rocket Q4 takes third place, but the drop in speed between it and the other two PCIe 4.0 drives is significant. Even more telling is how little difference there is between it and the P5, the latter scoring considerably better at copying program folders.
PCMark 10 Overall Storage Test
First, there’s the overall PCMark 10 Full System Drive Benchmark from UL. This score represents how well drives do throughout the entire PCMark 10 run, and are the sanctioned scores presented by UL’s software at the end of each run. This score includes a weighted average of every simulated activity that the PCMark 10 storage test runs, from copying files to launching games, booting an OS to running creative applications. It’s a general indicator of how consistently a drive can perform through 23 different usage scenarios.
Right out of the gate, the TeamGroup T-Force Cardea Zero Z440 shows that PCIe 4.0 certainly has its advantages. It isn’t as far ahead of the PCIe 3.0-based WD Blue SN550 as I think it should be given the cost of upgrading to the new spec and the price per gigabyte of each, but bear in mind that this test is measuring UL’s model of throughput on real-world copy and launch tasks, as opposed to straight-line drag-race reads.

3DMark Storage Benchmark
Probably the most important question in our readers’ minds is how the Z440 performs for gamer-centric tasks. We used 3D Mark’s Storage Benchmark to find out! It’s a DLC for the venerable 3D benchmarking software that represents a disk’s overall gaming performance with a number derived from a series of relevant tests.
These include loading and saving a game in several popular titles, streaming, and moving game data around.
All five SSDs are excellent for gaming
The average 3DMark Storage Benchmark score is 2,000, so it’s great to see that all of our test drives did well. How the first two spots resolve has become familiar by now. The MP600 is the overall winner, but it doesn’t pull far enough ahead of the Z400 for it to matter in a practical sense. Sabrent’s SSD takes third place, and the P5 comes in last this time.

Test Setup & Methodology
A closer look at the graphene & copper thermal label
The WhatIfGaming test bench consists of a Gigabyte AORUS X570 Elite motherboard running the Ryzen 5 5600X. We use 16 gigs of TEAMGOUP’s T-Force ARGB Xtreem 3600MHz RAM and a Samsung 970 EVO Plus as the primary drive. The board’s firmware is up to date, and we’re using the Pro edition of Windows 11 as the OS.
Each tested disk is slotted in as the secondary drive. They are formatted and partitioned when the individual test calls for it. The Cardea Zero’s competition is comprised of four SSDs. Two of them also take advantage of PCIe 4.0 speeds. In contrast, the others are PCIe 3.0 to better showcase the standard’s evolution and improvements.
Crystal DiskMark 6.0
Okay, let’s move off of the PCMark 10-derived tests and on to some classic ones. The Crystal DiskMark 6.0 sequential tests simulate best-case, straight-line transfers of large files…
Speeds? Meet ceiling. This test is a clear indicator of the bandwidth differences between PCIe 3.0 and 4.0, with all drives in the latter category scoring within margin-of-error of one another, while also leading potential 3.0 threats like the WD Blue SN550 by a comfortable clip.
In contrast, the utility’s 4K (or «random read/write») tests simulate typical processes involved in program/game loads or bootup sequences.
Here the drive sets the pace for 4K random read speeds that we’ve seen thus far among PCIe 4.0 drives (tying with the Seagate FireCuda 520). The 4K write speeds, though, were in line with the rest of the 4.0 drives but topped by two of the 3.0s.
CrystalDiskMark Sequential & Random Read/Write Tests
Our battery of tests starts off with the always popular CrystalDiskMark. First, we wanted to test the maximum read and write speeds claimed by the manufacturer. The sequential read/write portion of the test looks as follows:
All SSDs perform close to or better than advertised
The Z440 performed as advertised with a negligible difference in sequential write speed. The second PCIe 4.0 drive in the running, the Corsair Force MP600, slightly exceeded its 4950MBps / 4250MBps official results.
The Sabrent Rocket Q4 rounds out the speedy competition and was the most surprising. It’s in third place due to a slower write speed, but real-world results exceed advertised read & write speeds by around 200 and 400MBps, respectively.
This test shows a stark difference between PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 4.0 capabilities. Both the Samsung 970 EVO Plus and Crucial’s P5 are outstanding PCIe 3.0 drives with results that closely conform to their spec sheets. They’re noticeably slower overall, which you’re likely to experience when handling large sequential workloads.
4K Random Read/Write
Things take a more interesting turn with the random read & write test. CrystalDiskMark’s first test allows the drives to let loose. This one complicates their lives by introducing random transfers of small 4K files. The results are indicative of the worst performance you can expect from a modern SSD.
The random read & write torture-test
The Rocket 4 takes first place in the read portion. TEAMGROUP’s drive follows closely, with the MP600 trailing the other two PCIe 4.0 disks with a score of just over 60MBps. Crucial’s P5 handles itself well despite its PCIe 3.0 limitations, with only the 970 EVO Plus struggling to keep up.
Samsung’s drive redeems itself in the writing portion, scoring first. The Cardea Zero takes a slight lead among the PCIe 4.0 drives, while the P5 is markedly slower than the rest.
Launching Creative Applications
As anyone who regularly works in programs like Adobe Premiere or Photoshop can tell you, oftentimes a pinch point is the time it takes for the program to launch. There are a lot of elements that creative applications need to load.
These two tests don’t tell the whole story of how a drive will perform for all creative applications. But they’re nonetheless interesting fodder for folks who live and breathe these Adobe apps.
Here the TeamGroup drive placed midpack, though interestingly, the PCIe 4.0 drives generally underperformed the 3.0 ones in this particular data set. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues in future reviews of PCI 4.0 drives.
To illustrate the CrystalDiskMark benchmark performance better, we will give you a graph.
Next we will take a look at two very critical aspects of overall desktop performance. The boot time from pressing the power button to reaching your desktop is something we all care about. How important is hard drive speed when it comes to boot time? In the graph below we answer that question as well as look at how long it takes to move a 6GB file.
As we might expect, the hard drive speed has a dramatic impact on both the boot time and file transfer speeds.
We decided to test a few common computer benchmarks to see if the drive would make a difference in the overall score. As you can see below, there was no realistic gain in performance from drive speed in these benchmark programs.
Lastly we wanted to take a look at the heat response of this drive. To evaluate the heat output we put the drive under the worst case scenario. There was no air flow at all used for this test. We ran Crystal Disk Mark 15 times in a row and watched the heat values in HWInfo and in the Team Group SSD Toolbox.
The results are surprising. The idle temperature is around 38C with the stock heat sink. Installed just as it ships, with the stock heat sink, the Team Group drive reached a temperature of 97C and was throttling most of the time. For comparison the HP drive reached 88C and was also throttling.
When we added the motherboard heat sink, both drives stopped throttling but the temps are still higher than we expected. Both drives heated up quickly but stayed around 65-70C for the duration of our torture test.
Our experience with the Cardea Zero Z440 is overall very positive. In terms of raw performance, Team Group delivers what it promises. Out of all the generation 4 SSD’s on the market today, it’s performance numbers ranks it up with the current fastest models.
Whether or not your system can use all the of the speed inherent in Generation 4 will depend greatly on the usage. We observed super fast boot times and incredible file transfer speeds with this NVMe drive but generally speaking most applications won’t be able to utilize the enhanced speed that generation 4 has to offer.
Some may see the lack of a large heatsink as a potential downside to the drive, however, we see it as a selling point. Disassembling a newly purchased NVMe drive and potentially damaging it as well as putting the warranty into question is not a good idea. Team group saves you money here and makes it perfect for clean installation with factory motherboard heatsinks.
The Cardea Zero Z440 is competitively priced at $189.99. Looking at Newegg for other Generation 4 SSD’s we find the price ranges from $189.99 up to $249.99. Given the price point and design style, we feel this drive is a big success for Team Group and would make a nice addition to any gaming system.

Copy Tests
Finally, some copy actions derived from PCMark 10 traces. While at first these numbers might look low compared to the straight sequential-throughput numbers achieved in benchmarks like Crystal DiskMark 6.0 and AS-SSD, that’s due to the way this score is calculated and natural differences between the test files.
PCMark 10 expresses the average throughput of a transfer when the file is being copied on the same drive. If you’re regularly copying multiple versions of files on your drive from one folder to another, this test is a handy relative throughput measure.
Here PCIe 4.0 has the best chance to shine over the 3.0 drives so far: on raw throughput. In these tests the T-Force Cardea Zero Z440 posts top numbers so far on the ISO and JPEG copy runs. (Note: The PCIe 4.0-capable Seagate FireCuda 520 curiously underperforms on the ISO trial here.)
Packaging & Presentation
The disk arrives in an eye-catching box
The Cardea Zero Z440 arrives in an attractive box housing a secure blister pack. A picture of the SSD on an abstract red & white background takes center stage on the front.
It is surrounded by blips of info regarding its capacity and the efficiency of the thermal label. Turning the box around reveals simple visual installation instructions and further information on speeds and working environment parameters.
Getting the drive out of its packaging takes some finessing since it’s firmly stuck inside. Once liberated, it makes for an attractive sight with its black & copper thermal label and blue PCB. While not unique, the thermal label is one of the Z440’s main draws. It’s a thin layer composed of copper and graphene that fits under existing motherboard heatsinks.
Built-in Heat Mitigation
Having this slim protective layer opens up several options. TEAMGROUP claims that it decreases working temperatures by 9°C. That means you can leave the disk exposed and not worry about thermal throttling even if the slot you’re using it in doesn’t have a heatsink. Alternatively, you should have no trouble mounting your motherboard’s padded heatsink for additional heat mitigation since the label is thin enough to fit under them.
A standard length of 80mm allows the Z440 to integrate into most notebooks seamlessly, not to mention find a home on any supporting AM4 or Intel Rocket / Alder Lake desktop motherboard.

The spec sheet reveals some telling tidbits about the drive. For instance, it shows that the Z440 has a first-gen Phison E16 controller. While not the newest, it has established itself as reliable.
Its NAND flash is TLC’s 96-layer 3D BiCS4. TEAMGROUP didn’t skimp on longevity either, as the disk has a respectable lifespan of 3,600 terabytes written. It’s backed by a limited five-year warranty, further signaling TEAMGROUP’s trust in its product’s longevity.
Our Sample
Two versions of the Z440 are on offer. We did hands-on testing of the 2TB drive, but you can get a smaller 1TB model as well. Their differences boil down to capacity and a corresponding doubling in the larger drive’s max TBW.
The maximum read and write speeds of 5,000 and 4,400MBps are identical. Padding the lineup with larger and smaller capacities would have been preferable. Still, the two on offer cover a majority of use cases.
Pricing
Putting the Cardea Zero into context regarding price adds to its appeal. At the time of writing, you could find the 2TB version selling for around $260. That’s about the same as a non-discounted MP600 yet noticeably cheaper than the likes of Samsung’s 980 PRO.
Its price is par for the course in today’s environment. It’s true that the more expensive drive boosts higher max read & write speeds. Most users aren’t likely to notice, even if they dabble in video production or content creation.
So, ultimately, you end up getting quite a nifty package for the price.

If there’s anything to ding TEAMGROUP for, it’s the lack of proprietary disk monitoring utilities. You’ll have to install third-party programs to keep an eye on the drive’s health and access detailed usage breakdowns.
From Zero to Hero
The $249 TeamGroup T-Force Cardea Zero Z440 is a PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD, based on a second-generation, 96-layer 3D TLC NAND manufacturing process. This Type-2280 (80mm-long) drive comes in just two storage-volume sizes: the 1TB version on the bench here, and a bigger 2TB at exactly double the list price.

TeamGroup rates the 2TB variant of the drive for peaks of 5,000MBps on sequential reads and 4,000MBps on writes. The latter figure, quite unconventionally, is rated faster—4,400MBps—on the lower-capacity 1TB version of the drive. (Usually it works the opposite way, with higher capacities offering higher rated speeds within a given SSD family, thanks to parallelism of data transfers across more NAND chips, among other reasons.) The drive is rated for a massive terabytes-written (TBW) endurance rating of 1,800TBW in the 1TB variant (a figure that doubles to 3,600TBW in the 2TB version). In keeping with that robust rating, it carries a five-year warranty.

On the surface, the 25-cent per-gigabyte TeamGroup T-Force Cardea Zero Z440 might look like a ho-hum value, but this isn’t necessarily the case for two reasons. One, right now the 1TB version of the drive we tested is hovering around $190 across several major etailers, making it a competitor to some of the higher-end PCIe 3.0 drives we’ve benched it against, like the $180 (street price) Samsung SSD 970 EVO .
Second, the extremely high TBW rating and five-year warranty add value at levels that most PCIe 3.0 drives will struggle to match. In this way, the drive is more comparable to the PCIe 4.0-enabled Corsair Force Series MP600 that PC Labs tested alongside it, both in its durability rating and the length of its warranty period.
